My 1987 Astro (4.3 L V-6) began life with average 25mpg highway and 19-20 mpg city. It has Power Steering & AC (front only). By now it's down to 16mpg city and I don't take it on the highway any more. It has 250,000 miles and is relatively OK mechanically, but because of a very bad accident (I was broadsided by a large Oldsmobile in 1988) it has suffered very bad corrosion along the top of the windshield. A very good reliable mechanic has cared for the Van-O-Rama, as I call it, since 1992, and has kept it running through thick and thin. Not GM's best effort (the AC has been particularly troublesome), it has nevertheless been a reliable transporter of people and cargo, which was why I bought it. Time to retire the van, and since there are still thousands of them on the streets in various stages of being rebuilt, I am sure I will find a taker. Here in Southern California many find their way down to Mexico where they are restored and customized.
