Often this term is used to describe the years of the late 1930's in the Soviet Union. Stalin undertook a policy of purging the Party of all Communists he suspected were traitors to the Soviet Union or were plotting against him. The purges were horrible, and all "traitors" who went on mock trials all were found guilty. Later in the memoirs of Nikita Khrushchev, he recalls speaking to his friends about the curiosity of all the communists who were tried, none were ever found innocent. Khrushchev also reveals that he played a big part in the purges and signed off on over 40,000 death sentences for "disloyal communists".
The setting of the book Darkness At Noon is 1938 during the Stalinist Great Purge and Moscow show trials. The USSR is not named, and the book is used as an allegory for the events that happened.
Russification
Stalin had two sets of purges by "show trials." The first was directed against rival political figures like Zinoviev, Kamenev, Bukharin and other leading Bolshevik/Communist Party rivals. The second set was directed against officers of the Red Army. The purge of the party members kept Stalin in power. The purge of the army officers nearly lost it for him, because when World War 2 broke out, most of the experienced and capable officers had been eliminated.
