The reason the mower dies when the blades are engaged can be caused by a couple of different things. One, the spindles for the blades are frozen so the blades can't turn stopping the engine. Two, the fuel system isn't allowing sufficient fuel/air flow when the engine is put under a load.

Why does a mower shut off when the blades get engaged?
Possibly a bad switch under the seat. This is a safety feature that kills the motor if you overturn the mower. Unless the seat switch is made, the motor will not run with the blades engaged. There is also a switch on the blade engagement mechanism so the mower "knows" when they are engaged.

That's not much info to work with. But, assuming that you are talking about a riding mower which quits when you engage the blades, I would tell you to check out the seat safety switch. For some readon the mower doesn't think there is anyone on the seat. It will not run with the blades engaged with no one on the seat. Somewhere attached to the seat you will find a small switch with two wires going to it. It may have come unplugged or it could just be a bad switch.

How do you know when riding mower deck spindles are bad?
Normally you will start to hear a loud grumbling sound from underneath the mower when the blades are engaged. With the mower shut off, release the tension from the belt for the blades. Raise the deck so you can grab the blades from the bottom. You should not be able to rock the blades from side to side or up and down. If you can then you probably have a bad spindle. You can do this for wach of the spindles to check them all.

Be sure that when you put the unit in reverse that the blades for the mower are not engaged. That will prevent the mower from operating
