Islam started after the Christian church, so if you are familiar with the Judeo-Christian religion and ancient Arabic paganism you will see that Quran and many of its ideologies/theology comes from The Bible, the Tanak, and Arabic Paganism. In fact the word Allah, is the name of the Arabic moon god of Saudi Arabia which is why all Mosques have a sign of a Cresent moon with a star

*PLEASE NOTE: I am not saying Islam is wrong or anything like that, I am just giving you known public information*

Answer

Sure the one asking this question is not Muslim because no true religion is based on ideas of other religion or religions. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three God religions coming from same God. Each religion is coming to correct for the deviations and alterations of former religion or religions but all are coming from same source. All religions are based on Islam in its broad sense as Islam is an Arabic word meaning submission to God, the one and only one God. So, started by universe creation and all God prophets since Adam called to Islam. However Islam per God revelation of Torah to Moses is called Judaism. Islam per God revelation of the Bible to Jesus is called Christianity. Islam per God revelation of Quran to Muhammad is called the same name Islam. You may refer to questions below on the proofs on God revelation of Quran to prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and on why Quran was revealed.

What is the most effective way of defending against religious ideologies and the institutions enshrining them?

If you subject religions to scientific scrutiny, many of the ideas will lack proof. One questions why a certain belief came to be; and many times the ideas will be completely non-rational. Religions can be de-constructed. There is enough corruption in religious systems for the institutions to discredit themselves.
