During the nineteenth century, American audiences primarily favored European classical music, considering it more sophisticated and prestigious. American composers faced challenges gaining recognition and support for their work. Additionally, there was a lack of infrastructure and institutions to promote and perform concert music by American composers.
The eighteenth century produced a huge number of composers and some of the greatest works of music. Bach, Handel, Beethovan, and Mozart were all a product of the eighteenth century.
Much classical music of the nineteenth century was geared towards engendering patriotism, i.e. it promoted an appreciation for, and feelings of pride in, one's country. This music might have incorporated segments of well-known folk tunes of that country, or been strong and passionate in its nature. Sibelius and Smetana, for example, were patriotic composers, as were many of the Russian composers of that century.
Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky are all composers of the late 19th century. They were breaking free from the common constraints of Romantic Music, and paving the way for changes that would herald the twentieth century, with more freedom of expression and harmonies.
Today we don't have classical music composers. Classical music is period around XVI to XIX century, even part of XX century. It was pushed by, in one side, atonality (modern music) and popular music in the other. Now, it's possible that today's composers write in a classical way. For example, the Prokofiev's First Symphony 'Classical' or Stravinsky's Pulcinella suite. But, even, we can't talk of classical music nowdays.
