Microsoft is constantly reworking their formats causing compatibility problems between the various versions of their software. Office 2007 was particularly problematical. Microsoft has released converter software to assist in sharing documents.

Open XML Converter allows you to convert Open XML files that were created in Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows so that you can open, edit, and save them in earlier versions of Office for Mac. This update contains several improvements to enhance stability and performance.

An alternative approach would be to choose an alternative format when saving the document to be shared which both versions of Word can use.
