Well I would go with what your heart tells you to and if you friends arent supportive they arent real friends.
If you are concerned about what your friends will say, it is definitely time to take karate. It will help you realize that you are an individual and your identity is not up to what others think about you, it is what you think about yourself. I've made many great friends through karate!

There really is no equivalent word for karate. Many will use the style of karate, such as Shidokan or Shotokan or Isshinryu, but that is a sub-set of karate rather than saying the same thing. And karate is a sub-set of martial arts, so that is not the same.
