I have a similar condition with both big toes and one "index" toe. I went to a podiatrist a few months ago and he said that the cracking is likely due to trauma to the nail. What this means is that it is completely benign and harmless (i.e., not caused by fungi), but when I asked how to "fix it", the short answer I got is that you really can't.

I occasionally think about getting a second opinion because I have a hard time believing him about not being able to repair the nails. The big toes don't really bother me because it's mostly a cosmetic problem, but the "index" toe has a noticeably weaker nail that is split down the middle, and it tends to catch on things more easily.
