My boyfriend is in the late stages of alcoholism He cant eat and is extremely thin. Most of his caloric intake is from booze. Doctors suspect he is diabetic now.Does that happen often?

It is certainly not as common as the 'flu', but there are many conditions that can be caused by alcoholismamong others. Cases such as this are closer to the rare end of the scale, but they happen often enough that most doctors will be able to diagnose it, given his background and symptoms.
