Your priority is to choose a healthy relationship with yourSELF first, because if you don't, you are going to be caught in similar situations, again and again, even if it's with other relationships.

You should never be afraid to choose what is best for you, just because you fear the loss or the change it might have on a relationship.

The healthier and more honest your relationship is with yourself, the more likely you would meet someone who reflects that. The more you think you have to change in order to be loved, the more you are going to attract people who put you in situations where you have to choose between yourself and someone else.

All of that being said, speaking as a counselor, I can say that "open relationships" can work for some couples, but it's very rare. Both would really have to be on board and capable of distinguishing lust from love. And even if a couple has an open relationship, it takes a deep, deep commitment to one another that most do not realize.

In most cases, an open relationship is suggested when one of the parties thinks this is an easy way out of the responsibility of intimacy. It is a way to hold on to the security of someone who clearly is devoted to him, while also being able to satisfy his irresponsible cravings. And this always goes bad. Very bad.

Be true to yourself, even if it means losing the relationship. In the end, you will know true love as you take care of yourself, and attract someone who supports that, but if you sacrifice yourself for the sake of trying to keep someone close, you will end up with wounds that will carry over into your next relationship.
