Often when a car won't start the solution is simple. The battery is only one small fraction of what aids to the spark of a motor. Before worrying over the entire engine you should first check the alternator, distributor, ignition, spark plugs and spark plug wires.

You will need to have the engine scanned for codes and the repair made. Then you can have the check engine light reset. If the repair is not done then the light will come back on. You need to have it checked for codes. You can then diagnose and repair the cause. After repair, you can clear code with a scan tool, or by unhooking the battery. Unhooking the battery and reconnecting it is Not a good idea as it may cause a voltage spike and damage the computer the same as taking a battery cable off with the engine running and then reinstalling it to see if the alternator is working or not.

We need more info. The alternator is necessary, but the starter turns the flywheel to start the engine requiring a good battery. Does the battery turn the engine over, does the engine fire the spark plugs. Is there sufficient gasoline in the tank to start the car? Please give symptoms. Thanks.

Try a battery charger for a while and see if you can get enough of a charge to start the engine. If the voltage is up when you try to start the engine, check the battery post connections. See if you have voltage THERE when you try to start it. Sometimes a corroded battery terminal will act the way you described. If that isn't it, check the connections to the starter. If you have good voltage to the starter when you try to start it, the starter is probably bad.
