My dog won't eat. What's wrong?

If you puppy acts like he can't swallow his food very well, you need to take him to a veterinarian right away, It is hard to tell for sure what is wrong with him, but he may have something stuck in the roof of his mouth or in his throat. He also might be ill or be in need of worming, or he could have an infection or other problem with his teeth.

Sometimes if the dog food is old, it tastes rancid. Puppies and dogs have a built-in dislike of anything that smells spoiled, as it may not be healthy for them.

Try to buy a dog food in which lamb is the first or second ingredient. Lamb is appealing to a large cross-section of dogs. Science Diet is a good, nutricious dog food that most dogs like the taste of. Sometimes a simple change in food brands will do the trick.

If all else fails, leave the dog's food out where he can get it . . . a dog will not starve itself. (Cats will, though!)

You might want to have the puppy wormed . . . if he has worms, it could affect his appetite. Be aware that worming is in two parts two weeks apart. Just one worm medicine dose will not kill the worm eggs still in his tummy. These eggs will hatch inside of two weeks, and then the second dose will kill them before they can mature and lay eggs.

I have had the same problem too. My dog barely ate anything, and when he did, it looked like he only ate enough to survive. When I took him to the veterinarian, I found out he had an allergy against the food type I was giving him. You might want to try the same.

Another reason why your dog isn't eating might be that he doesn't want the food because he knows he gets something better. Many dog owners do this common mistake. If you start giving your dog human food, such as leftovers from the dinner, when your dog doesn't eat, he won't see it as "Oh, what a nice master I have". He will notice that if he doesn't eat, he will get something that tastes better. This will result in him not eating the dog food, simply because he knows he gets something better if he waits. So do not, under any circumstances, give your dog anything else than dog food.

I can't think of any other reasons. But I recommend you take your dog to the vet and let them help you.
