The friend was wrong.
It is a sad situation, but in the event a borrower goes delinquent or defaults on a vehicle loan, the lender has every right to take possession or to repossess the vehicle. She may still be able to redeem it, but only if she brings the payments up to date. Cosidering her likely current financial difficulty, it might be best for her to let the vehicle go, to file Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, listing the car loan and all currently unpaid medical bills, and to seek help in obtaining a ride to her medical appointments.
