Laptop keyboards are usually something of a compromise; to squeeze all the required functionality into the laptop case, some keys are given extra functions - and a special function key (often labelled Fn) used to access the extra functions. So using a separate keyboard means that you have a "standard" layout. The other principle advantage is that a laptop keyboard is expensive and difficult to repair, if you damage the external keyboard then it's easily replaced.
