If there is no outside damage to the door then you should try to remove the inside panel.This will allow you to look in to see what maybe wrong.Once in side shine a light to look at the mechanics of the door,then shoot oil all over the place to free up moving parts.Then pull the outter handle to see if door in the lock possitiion,if not locked finish the job disassymbly door lock mechanism.Sometimes the door slide rods fall off and this could be where the problem is.
If the sliding door on the 1999 Mercury Villager will not stay open, check for something that is not allowing the latching mechanism to lock into place. Make sure that the door is all the way back so that it can lock in.

The 2000 Mercury Villager front door panels are held in place with two retaining bolts and eight retaining clips. Remove the retaining bolts and pry outward on each retaining clip.
