First, my condolences - though all of us Veterans know what price we could pay, we also realize that no parent should have to outlive their kids.
Since you're a direct relative, you can get a copy of his service record, which will have all unit postings, from the National Archives. They've made it a lot easier in recent years for family members to obtain records also. Not necessarily faster, but easier. Keep in mind though that any classified units he might have been assigned to might be redacted. As a former Submarine Sailor, I know how hard it was for my family to not know what I was doing while on active duty.
You can initiate the request online at the Archives' eVetRecs website - the link is below.

I am not sure any president's son died on Mt. Washington. Several presidents lived to see a son die-- Abraham Lincoln lost two young sons, Calvin Coolidge's son also died young... but they were not climbing mountains. Mr. Lincoln's son Eddie died at the age of four, probably from tuberculosis; another son, Willie, died at age 11, probably of typhoid. A third son, Tad lived only to the age of 18 and died of heart disease. Calvin Coolidge's son was also in his teens when he died of blood poisoning. Another president whose sons died was Franklin Pierce-- his young son Frank died at age four, from typhus, and his son Benjamin died in a railroad accident at age 11. (You asked about George Washington, but he and Martha did not have children, so no son of theirs died.)
