It depends on the time of year and where the planets are in their orbits. In many cases the "star" is not a star at all but a planet. Venus is the most likely candidate.

What bright planet can be seen in the western sky of Virginia at 8PM?

If a main sequence star has an apparent magnitude of 5 what is it's spectral type?

It may be just about anything. The apparent magnitude tells us how bright the star looks to us, not how bright it really is. The apparent magnitude (or brightness) depends both on the absolute magnitude (real brightness), but also depends on the star's distance.

What is the bright star you can see right next to the moon tonight Sept 29th 2009?

There is no "star of the east". Everything "rises" in the east and sets in the west. As the Earth follows its path around the Sun, once per year and spins once per day, the stars appear to rise 4 minutes earlier each day, so there is no particular star that always appears in the east, or which always rises in the east at a specific time.English boxer, Barney Aaron, was nicknamed "The Star of the East".

Can you see Venus on earth in the night sky?

You can see Venus almost everytime of year - sometimes it's in the evening sky, in the western part of the sky and sometimes it's in the morning sky, in the eastern part of the sky. Today is currently July 11, 2209 and Venus is visible about an hour or so before sunrise in the east. Mars is a few degrees above Venus. Set an alarm for 4:30 - 5:00 am and go look at them.
