• Haast's eagle was previously the Moa's only predator - once the Moa had been hunted to extinction the Haast's eagle died out too.
• Huia were hunted for their distinctive feathers, which were originally worn in the hair by Maori chiefs, then by 'fashionable' Europeans as adornments for hats in the early 20th Century.
• The Stephen's Island Wren was considered to be the only known species in the world to be wiped out by a single animal, the lighthouse keeper's cat.
