Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Nyasa all stand out as pretty good sized. They are part of the so-called African Great Lakes, or African Great Lakes system. A link can be found below to an article complete with a map. Note that these lakes are measured by area and not by water volume. Lake Chad, which is considered the fourth largest of the African lakes, has a large area that varies greatly because it is so shallow. In a really wet year, it is huge, but a little water loss causes the lake to contract greatly. Additionally, Lake Tanganyika, though it has approximately half the surface area of Lake Victoria, has approximately six times the volume of water in it!
The largest lake in Africa is Lake Victoria, which is the second-largest lake in the world. The second largest lake in Africa is Lake Tanganyika. It is the seventh largest lake on earth and the second deepest.

There are many small natural lakes in South Africa, but no large ones like the American Great Lakes. The largest inland water bodies are man-made reservoirs, the most significant being on the Vaal River, supplying water to Johannesburg and Gauteng Province.

Most of Africa's major lakes are located near the Great Rift Valley, a large trench system stretching over 3,700 miles from the Middle East to Mozambique in Southern Africa. The Rift Valley is known for its stunning landscapes and holds many of Africa's deepest and largest lakes, such as Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Malawi.
