The Hundred Days - Napoleon escaped from exile in Elba and returned to France. His army flocked to him again, and people cheered. The Bourbon King fled. Unfortunately, Europe could not accept Napoleon and declared war on France. Napoleon's last attempt at power ended with his soldier's lives on the fields of Waterloo. After that crushing defeat, he lost public and political favour. Stripped of support, the Emperor abdicated and surrendered himself to the British.

Did Octavian's rise to power signaled an end to the Roman Republic?

Not quite. It is better to say that Octavian's rise to power consolidated the end of the republic. During Julius Caesar's rule, the republic was all but dead and Caesar's dictatorial powers effectively ended the republic. Although men like Cicero, Pompey and Brutus tried to keep it going, they were unsuccessful.

If you put a high bid on eBay do you only pay the first increment over the last bid or does it immediately jump to your high bid?

Your high bid generally adds a single increment, although there are exceptions. If the current high bidder (ie, the person you're bidding against) also has entered a high bid, you will be outbidding each other 'by proxy' and whichever of you made the highest bid will then show as the new current high bidder. Should you both have made the same high bid, the person who made that bid first will show as the current high bidder. If you are bidding on an item with a reserve and your high bid hits (or surpasses) that reserve, your bid will show as the reserve amount.
