Just got a quote for my 2000 CR-V (same series engine as your Civic). Including a new water pump (HIGHLY recommended to be done at the same time) - replace accessory drive belt - flush and refill cooling system - also recommended a valve adjustment. Dealer estimate for all this was: $760. I also took it to a RELIABLE independent shop who said that the dealer's estimate wasn't out of the the ballpark for "dealer work," but gave me an estimate (using genuine Honda parts) that was about $100. to $150. less. The caution with all this is - they don't really know what they'll find until they get into the engine. There is also the possibility, on a vehicle of that age, that the timing belt tensioner pulley may also need to be replaced. Good luck - hope this helps. Just remember - you're driving a car that,properly cared for and maintained, could last you close to 300K miles!

Honda recommends to replace water pump at that point for 2 reasons: 1.) the labor cost to replace a bad pump is essentially the same as a timing belt so let's do it while we're in there; and 2.) what a money maker - look at the price - $59 !!!!!! Don't get sucked into that Honda ripoff. Don't replace the water pump until it needs replaced. If at some time in the future the water pump goes bad, while they are in there, then replace the timing belt again. Think about how many cases of beer, or steaks, or gallons of gas you can buy with $58.66 Replace the water pump when U have the belt done. As an EX Honda mechanic (22 years ) years this is common sense. I have a 2000 V6 ready for a belt. I will replace the belt, the water pump, crank and camshaft seals as well. I belive in doing a Commplete job. I am also replacing hoses,thermostat and coolant, I want to get im my car and go with No worries. And since I don't have the equipment any more i WILL BE PAYING the labor for this.
