Hi John,
How wise of you to pose this question as you have. As you might recall I have browsed through more poetry anthologies than I care to recall and regularly Google the opening line in the hope that I might discover its provenance.
Sorry I do not have the answer but will step out of the equation now as if an answer is to be found it will be through here.
Cheers
Kevin Hewitt

A way of claiming you were the first to get to something. First to comment, first to favorite, first to view. It means you did it before anyone else could, just like in real life if you were to finish a race before anyone else.
A first aid is just a person who provides the initial, FIRST aid. It could be anyone, as long as they are providing aid. This is as opposed to second aid which could be a paramedic or hospital.
Anyone can be an author. The only problem is that first you have to find an agent and then find a publisher. But never doubt that you cannot be published just because of your age. An example is, the author of the Outsiders was only 16 when her book was published. That could be you. Keep your hopes up and be prepared for fame when your book is published.
of course not , when you marry you have your soul and your life for your wife and kids....how could anyone do that !!!!
