The oil pressure warning light activates from a pressure sensing switch in the engine oil lubricating system. When the oil pressure goes below a preset minimal safe pressure for the engine , the light is supposed to come on.
The speed of the oil pump is directly proportional to the engine speed, and if the engine turns too slowly, then the oil pump turns too slowly, and the output volume of oil will be reduced.
To my recollection, the most probable causes of activation of the low oil pressure warning light on deceleration of the vehicle are:
- The oil level in the crancase is LOW, or
- The engine idle speed is set too low, and thus the oil pump output is low.
