Not likely as GM restyled the Caprice/Impala slightly in 1980.
The oil filter housing is located on the front of the engine cases. It has a single bolt that attaches the housing to the engine. The housing itself is finned for cooling.
it is in the vin usually the 8th number from the front for 81 and newer and the 5th for 80 and older. the last six of the vin is stamped on the engine near the oil pan.
Not positive of course without looking at the vehicle....however if it is full with oil...my next step would be to check the oil level/pressure sensor which should be found on the lower side of the engine block or on the oil pan itself....maybe melted wires...a faulty switch...something of that nature

That's depends on the oil pan, but most of the stock ones were about 4 quarts plus 1 in the filter. Unless the engine was built for a dump truck or something, in which case there were 6 qt., 8 qt., and 10 qt. capacity.
