It's the way the transaxle is built. This is normal. If you were able to hold the right wheel still and prevent it from turning, the left would start turning instead. In a rear wheel drive vehicle, it's called a "limited slip differential." (It no doubt has a different name in a front wheel system, but serves the same purpose).
