Troubleshooting a fuel pump problemPresuming this question stems from a vehicle that will not start at all, and not one that runs intermittently or runs for a minute and dies, the first and simplest test is to determine if the pump is getting power. When you turn the key on, you should hear a humming sound coming from the fuel tank for a few seconds. If you do not, it may just be the fuse or relay. If you do hear the sound, then it likely works. In that case you need to check for fuel pressure. No fuel pressure could indicate a clogged pickup (attached to the pump in the tank) or the inline fuel filter (located under the body between the frame). However, the most common problem with gm vehicles is the fuel pump. If you decide that you need a new fuel pump, you may be able to buy just the repair kit. There are legitimate gm/ac delco dealers on eBay that will save a bunch of money over the dealer. This forum also provides step by step instructions for dropping the tank and replacing them. Moral of the story: Don't get screwed by a dealer to fix a simple fuel pump that GM intentionally designs with a short life.
