None - just switch it off at the wall. You are not going to need any softened water if you are going to be away and there is no point allowing the softener to recharge its resin block with salt. When you return just reset the clock/timer to the current time and day of the week. On the other hand, as the cost of salt is no big deal and the amount of electricity used by a water softener is quite small, it could just be left on along with other appliances such as fridge/freezer, etc., assuming you would leave those on anyway.

What causes bowel movement to be tiny ball size?

The question is: Do they float? As long as they float it means you are getting plenty of fiber and that's a good thing! The little 'ball' size isn't anything to worry about as long as you are regular. If you're that concerned, you could take a stool softener nightly so the 'tiny ball' situation may change. What is wrong is that your colon is holding on to too much water and this is drying out the stool. Try more water and the stool softener.

Why do you need a water softener in Phoenix?

Phoenix is known for having some of the hardest water in the country. Due to the drought conditions in this desert landscape, the water that reaches your faucet has to go through a lot to get there.A Water Softener literally reduces the hardness of the water. A Water Softener system utilizes ion-exchange resin, which is regenerated with salt (or with potassium*), to take the water to below 1 grain of hardness per gallon.Hard water can dramatically increase the cost to heat water because of the scale that builds up, increasing energy use. Additionally, hard water may shorten the life of water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, ice makers, faucets, pipes and other plumbing fixtures. Consequently, you may have to replace these items sooner than would otherwise be necessary. Installation of a Home Water Softener will save you money in the long run. Also, washing with soft water will use about 50% less soap, detergents, water conditioners, bleach, shampoo and conditioners, and you don't have to use any of the caustic or acidic Lime Removers.

Where does the salt go in a water softener?

The softener replaces calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium ions. Since sodium does not precipitate out in pipes or react badly with soap, both of the problems of hard water are eliminated. Water Softeners take ions such as Calcium and Magnesium and swap them for a small amounts of ions that are more ideal, such as sodium. Sodium does not respond poorly to soap and are far less harsh.
