I found this.. did not work for me.. but you might try it.
I really think the problem will be in the module under the hood, but I would check all the fuses first.
There is also the possibility the brake light switch is causing the problem, so a trip to the public library would be worth while.
In the refference section, they have all the manuals. Find one for your exact vehicle, and follow the step by step test proceedure, so you aren't just randomly replacing parts.
One other spot to check, is make sure the stop lights in the back window are not burned out.

In the 2000 model you press the button just behind the stick shift on the center consel.
ETS means ENHANCED TRACTION SYSTEM or what is commonly called, (Traction Control) The button is used to turn it off and on.
Push the eject button, is your broken or something?

unless someone has changed it your Alero has Dexcool in it. Dexcool is available at any auto parts store or Walmart.
GM vehicles do not use inertia/reset buttons
a bad sensor. the alero is notorius for many bad sensors. not an expensive replacement though
U might need new brakes.. did your brake light come on?
On my 2000 Alero I open drivers door and open fuse panel door. Then turn key onposition but don't turn engine over. Push in reset button until the light you want flashes then hold the reset button for a few seconds.
the flasher relay is part of your 4way flasher button there should be a recall if its not working correctly
