Yes, I do know that when my water pump was changed that the wheel was removed to gain access. Work space is very tight, my mechanic says its the tightest he has worked on at his garage.
how does the belts go on a 1996 Mazda millenia
There are four types of belts on a 1997 Mazda Millenia S. There are 4 seatbelts, a timing belt, a serpentine or drive belt, and a fan belt. Please refer to your owners manual for instructions on how to replace them. If you do not have an owners manual, you may purchase one through Amazon.com

the millenia requires an oil and oil filter change every 7000 miles. Check and adjust the brakes every 25,000 miles. The belts including the timing belt require replacement every 60,000 miles (although I did my millenia L at 70,000). Be careful here since the S model has special needs with that supercharger. Change all the fluids at 100,000 miles as well as the distributor cap and rotor, plug wires and fuel filter (which is accessable from inside the trunk, strangely enough). at 120,000 replace the belts and timing belt again and the water pump and alternator.
I had a shop change my belts and plugs and now it runs really bad. I think that when they replaced the belts that they moved it out of time.
timing belts are fairly easy to fix ,you need the # on the belt to get the right replacement ,go to an auto body shop, they know how to do this job.
there are 2 serpentine belts on the 2.3. the outermost one drives the compressor/power steering/waterpump. the inner one drives the alternator/ac compressor/vacuum pump. to change either, you need to relieve the tension on the automatic tensioner, i have a special tool for this. i also pull off the right wheel, and remove the lower splash shield. pulling the motor mount and the upper radiator hose gives you a lot of clearance, but it takes longer.
AC, alternator, power steering, and timing belts.
nothing
I was looking at the Gates website ( they make timing belts etc. ) and for the 1600 cc engine in a 2003 Mazda Protege ( Canada ) it shows ( 60,000 miles )
Here is a How to/ DIY (do it yourself) for your car. Its for water pump removal, but it shows how to remove the belts, since you have to remove the belts to obviously remove the water pump. http://www.tuningemotion.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2471
