The Soviet Union (Russia) and Germany were the primary combatants in Europe during WWII. Quite possibly, the most POWs were taken on the Russian front. There was extreme hatred (a race war) for both sides on the Russian front; consequently, not many POWs survived from either side.
Mazzini wanted a united front in Italy. He believed that if the people were unified in an uproar it would bring the people of Italy together. Creating a united Italian Nation

The US was not yet in the war and so missed participating in the massive bloodbaths which were the western front campaigns of 1915 and 1916.
