You can't get gif files to work with Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. They only work with earlier versions because you need to extend the gif on the timeline in order for it to be active and that can't be done in the newest version of the program. You can do it with 2.6 though. I know that for sure!

An animated GIF is an image encoded in a graphics interchange format (GIF), which consists of a number of pictures or frames in a single file and its graphic control extension that describes the same. Animations are .gif files, which are compatible for importing into Windows Movie Maker. However, many people seem to have problems getting the animations to work in the program.I'm not exactly sure why they can't get the animations to work (there could be a number of reasons). It seems some .gifs work while others don't. This is likely due to programming formats that were used to create the animation originally. In any case, if you are experiencing difficulty in getting your .gif animations to work, you might consider purchasing video editing software that provides for easier tasking of imported media. Or, if deciding to stick with Windows Movie Maker, substitute .gifs with creative transitions, effects of your own.
