Opponents of affirmative action have argued that the policy actually promotes "revers" discrimination. This is because affirmative action favors people based on race instead of ability.
John F. Kennedy, Jr.
Affirmative Action programs were created to help minorities have more employment and educational opportunities that would otherwise be taken by more advantaged students or employees. Affirmative Action has been criticized by many as being a discriminatory and arbitrary social policy, specially in jobs/schools where test scores and post-educational exam scores are utilized on a decision basis. Their thoughts are that Affirmative Action takes away from a successful student merely on the basis of race. This type of Policy allows for a school to reject an application or an employer to deny a promotion on the basis of race, even if the other candidate/student has better qualifications. On the other hand, Affirmative Action is also acclaimed by many as being necessary to create a diverse school and work place. By opening the doors to minority candidates, customer base and students in attendance will hopefully encourage other minorities to apply. Groups like the ACLU and the NAACP say these programs are necessary to preserve fairness and equality in the classroom and work force.
