GAR-(Grand Army of the Republic-Union veterans) was our nation's first established veteran's group. It died out when the last US Civil War veteran died in the 20th Century. The oldest still surviving veterans group is the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars-Founded by the veterans from the Spanish-American War of 1898; our FIRST "Foreign" War); founded in 1899. The American Legion-Founded in 1919 by US veterans of the Great War (The Great War was re-named WWI after WWII came about). AMVETs-American Veterans, was founded in 1944, by veterans of WWII. *VVA-Vietnam Veterans of America was founded by Viet War Vets in 1978/1979. *Note-Many Veteran's groups looked down upon Vietnam War veterans, and refused Viet War veteran's membership into their veteran organizations during the war. Viet vets were a fairly unwelcome group, all around. So, one of the VVA's motto's is, "we will NEVER turn our back(s) on another veteran!"
