Burned out bulb, corroded socket, corroded/damaged wiring.
Check the bulb. If the bulb's alright, use a test light to see if you get power to it when the brake pedal is pressed. If you don't, you probably have a broken wire somewhere.

My mechanic had to change a switch inside the steering column. Brake lights worked when turn signal was on. Have a mechanic check that.
