Historical figures from the Victorian era are often associated with being private and reserved about their personal lives. The stiff upper-lip mentality prevalent during this time discouraged displays of emotion or personal disclosure in public. In particular, Queen Victoria and her family were renowned for their discretion and adherence to strict social norms.

It appears in English in the 14th Century as 'silence is good' and again in the early 18th Century in English from a phrase translated from German. As silence has long been accepted in religious circles, a Bible of 1382 quotes that 'silence is made in Heaven'

Other common examples are "jumbo shrimp" and "bittersweet". A humorous example would be "military intelligence".
