Highly unlikely.

The American Pitbull Terrier is a breed of dog 100 times less likely to attack it's owner, But when it does it causes a lot more damage than a average dog and it always gets the bad press even if it was not a APBT that bit someone.

Out of all the news stories you hear and read I would say maybe 3 are actually APBT's, Most are crosses and some are just plain mutts that resemble APBT's.

But people will not watch or read stories about how a lab or a mutt bit someone, But put the all mighty name of APBT on there and everyone will read it and watch it to see what all kind of non sense they can pin on the breed.

It is very difficult to get an accurate count in dog bite statistics because most of the time they are not reported and if they are reported it is often not known what the breed of dog is. However, the statistics that are available do not show pit bulls as most likely to bite.

In fact, when tests were conducted by the American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS), Pit Bulls received a passing score better than some breeds who are considered nice dogs, such as Beagles and Golden Retrievers!

Also, as stated above, there are several dog breeds commonly referred to as pit bulls. So, based on that alone, they are much more likely to be blamed for an attack than other breeds because the number of dogs called pit bulls is skewed far higher than the actual number of American Pit Bulls Terriers there really are.

If the owner is terrible, very likely.

If the owner takes good care of his dog and knows how to handle him and train him, very unlikely.

Simple science, really.

Then again, I'd say those are the odds that any dog will attack.

There is no reliable statistic on that but I will assure you that the number is more less than numbers of pedrigee dogs destroyed because the puppy is not the right color or other plenty excuses for destroing dogs.

Any dog can be aggressive, but Pit Bull's get lots of stereotype - more than any other breed. If raised around people and with other dogs, there is no reason why a Pit Bull should be violent. Blame the deed, not the Breed!
