I've had this happen more than once on diesel trucks in my shop. You need to remove the fuel tank, and drain it well. Refill the tank to full with the proper fuel. You may have to crank it over for a while to get all the wrong stuff pushed through, but it will usually start up.
Shall we be pedantic? Diesel fuel is an oil. Petrol is not an oil - it's a a spirit.

Today's 5w/30 "fuel saving" oil as used by Ford, and many other oils, are formulated for both petrol and diesel engines. Any engine oil (of the correct grade) will lubricate a diesel engine, but diesels are dirty! The oil easily fouls up with diesel particulate, and an oil made only for petrol engines will form sludge unless changed very regularly.
