Yes there are freeze plug(S) on a ford 390. There is more then one on each side though I don't recall how many, I believe there are 6.

10 degrees BTDC without airpump and 6 degrees with airpump. For better performance, advance up to an additional 5 degrees. Back off if "pinging". My dad was a Ford mechanic and he usually just upped them 4-6 degrees after an initial break in period . He got my 390 2V up to 23 mpg back in 68 or so....
