The Containment Policy originates from the period of 1944 - 1947. During these years, George Kennan had written 'The Long Telegram' or 'Article X' in 1946 which generally laid the foundations for the policy.

I am not entirely sure as to whether the policy has officially stopped being used entirely, but since the Cold War is over and the threat of communism spreading through the west is extremely unlikely in the modern day, it is reasonable to consider it outdated and no longer necessary.
