To do a screen capture and save to dektop:
Apple key-shift-3 captures whole screen and saves image to desktop
Apple key-shift-4 Allows you to select a section of screen to save to desktop
To save to clipboard instead of save to desktop as an image, so you can paste into a document add the control key as well to either of those combinations.
e.g.
Apple key-control-shift-3 - saves whole screen to clipboard so can paste elsewhere.
