Connecticut is the name of the fifth state to be admitted into what is nowadays known as the United States of America.Specifically, the nutmeg state previously carried the name of Connecticut Colony. It originally formed on March 3, 1636 and subsequently merged with Saybrook Colony in 1644 and New Haven Colony in 1662. It joined the Union on January 9, 1788, seven days after the Province of Georgia.
Thomas HookerOne hundred settlers, led by the Minister Thomas Hooker, set up a new colony in Connecticut. These new settlers rejected the autocratic rule of the Puritans in Massachusetts. This new colony was founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1635 by Rev. Thomas Hooker. Three years later, the settlers drafted a document known as "The Fundamental Orders." It became the basis of the eventual constitution of the state.
The first Native American inhabitants of Connecticut were members of Algonkian tribes. Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer, was the first European in that area. The first European settlement was a British colony.
