Since the signing of the constitution by the original 13 colonies, the US was divided into slave-holding and non-slave-holding states, and this difference of policy was a source of conflict for various reasons. For example, if a slave manages to escape from a slave-holding state into a non-slave-holding state, does the slave get returned to his or her supposed owner? Is an escaped slave considered a person, or simply lost property? These and other issues caused a lot of tension, to the point where the south just wanted to secede. Meanwhile the north wanted to preserve the union. So the issue was resolved by means of war.
If you live in the North, they tell you it was mostly due to slavery. If you live in the South, they tell you it was mostly due to State's rights.
