I have a '94 Ford Escort. To remove the factory radio you need a special tool that inserts into the pairs of holes found on the right and left sides of the radio. Once the tool is inserted, you will hear a "click" and be able to remove the radio. If you can't get the tool, you could try using something that will fit into these holes. You need to be able to insert something at least a few inches inside to disengage the locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is not complicated like a key, it just needs to be depressed to release.
