Illinois is bordered by the Mississippi River on the west.

The Mississippi River formed most of the western boundary and the Ohio River formed most of the southern boundary of the territory. (Today, the state of Virginia, which was south of the Ohio, is now broken into Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia.)

The Tug-Fork River separates Virginia and West Virginia for a few miles and is the river where Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia Meet. The Tug Fork River flows north forming the KY/WV border most of its way and flows into the Big Sandy River that makes the rest of the border between WV and KY. The Big Sandy River flows into the Ohio River where Ohio, KY and WV meet.
At one time, the State of Virginia reached to the Mississippi River, so several states used to be part of Virginia. During the Civil War, the Western counties of Virginia formed a separate state, West Virginia.
