Vietnam was history's first war with the helicopter as a primary attack and infantry carrying aircraft. The AH-1 Cobra (AH=Attack Helicopter) was America's first purpose built & combat fielded attack helicopter. Helicopters did practically everything: Medi-vaced wounded men; attacked with mini-guns, attacked with 2.75 inch rockets; attacked with machine guns; transported artillery; transported armored vehicles; recovered downed aircraft; transported riverine boats; performed re-supply functions in the field with water containers, fuel containers, spare parts, etc.
Most important of all, helicopters formed the US Army's new type of infantry: The Airmobile Divisions, akin to WWII's Airborne Divisions (which were a new invention during WWII).
All were officially neutral.
