Depending on how old you are, you may believe several different things. Young people are told that increasing the amount that you exercise may lead to an increase of height, or playing certain sports like Basketball may "make you taller". However, the basic role of the skeletal system is to provide support and structure to your movements, with your axial skeleton (ribcage, vertebra and skull) providing rather nice protection to your comparatively soft organs, and your appendicular skeleton (limbs) providing a framework for your relatively fine movements.

The skeletal system consists of bones, cartilage and the connective tissue in between, ensuring that your body maintains its structure. Most importantly, bones give the rigid framework for your body, muscles contain many small fibres that can contract and produce forces, which we use competitively, and the connective tissue ensures that our muscles can attach to bone properly. Some contraction of muscle can be so powerful that the tendon literally rips off pieces of the bone, as may be seen with a certain type of fracture, for example, the Olecranon stress fracture - a particular type of fracture on the back of your elbow may occur due to excessive forces generated when throwing objects.

Furthermore, another specialization of the connective tissue are ligaments - you may have heard of Medial Collateral Ligament tears in professional athletes which may end their careers - ligaments are present to ensure that our joints do not exceed their normal range of motion, for example, with healthy ligaments in your elbow, you will be unable to specifically move your elbow from side to side, as it is held in place by the lateral and medical collateral ligaments. :)

One of this systems role being in to store minerals, this is a very important role in relevant to health and fitness as minerals help the body to work and also make bones stronger, and this creates the ability to do more.
