Well the Police Service of Northern Ireland already carry guns due to political issues. As for the police on the mainland, it's going to remain a touchy issue, and, personally, I feel a lot of the British public is a bit out of touch with the reality of law enforcement work, and the increasing danger of it. Police in urban areas are facing increased threats, although there are still places in Britain where they can continue to do without, e.g a peaceful village in the countryside. If there's a sufficient number of Firearms Authorised Officers available, and if that system is working for them, then it should suffice. If not, perhaps the policy should be up for reconsideration.
British police officers normally don't carry guns unless they need to respond to a gun-related incident.
