My best advice is to try both before buying...
Personally, I have a good close vision, and the non-xl looks less pixellated, so I bought the smaller one...

It will have better 3D support, a second stick, a couple of more buttons, a better battery, and its improved hardware (CPU and RAM) will make it faster. The new 3DS XL will also be able to play games that older 3DS' can't handle, like the port of Wii RPG Xenoblade Chronicles. More titles are sure to be exclusive to the new 3DS, so if you want a system that will play every 3DS game that comes out in the future, you'll need the new 3DS XL when it releases (October in Japan, sometime in 2015 in North America and Europe).
