This is of course purely a matter of opinion... that said, I believe that government must weigh the importance and relevance of anything that it spends money on. If it is funding the project, clearly gov't has a responsibility to ensure that the money is well spent, and that the results and goals of the project are worthy. If the government is not funding the project, and the research does not break any established domestic or international laws, then the government has nothing more to say.
