Swordtails are live breeders, which means they give birth to live young. You can leave a male with the female if you like, the only problem is that the males will eat the babies for a snack. The female will also eat the babies if she gets a chance. Normally she won't bother with them for a few hours after birth however. It has something to do with hormones that are released when she gives birth.
If you want your young to survive, you should get a breeding net/trap. A better way would be to have lots of hiding spots in your tank for the little baby fish. Live plants are recommended, but plastic ones will do. A floating plant is a good hiding spot as well. They are able to get food there when it gets stuck in the plant.
The best way for them to survive is to set up a separate 5-10 gallon tank with the same parameters as your primary tank, and place your female in there while she is pregnant.
Some people like to remove the female right after she gives birth while other like to leave her in the baby tank for a day or two so she can recuperate.
This goes for all live breeders as far as I know, most common being guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, and limias.
There are lots of websites available for information on taking care of the young if you search it on Google. I hope this helped.
Her tummy will be smaller.
yes
Yes.
if one male gets one fish pregnant and then tries to get a nother preg the one will kill him and her Actually, that's for people!!! Regarding at your swordtails, you should have 1male to 3females... or else, you might get your female swordtail stressed out due to over harassing by your 3 MALES...
At about 6-7 months old
Depends on the size and age of the female, she can have as few as 5 or more than 50.
The only time a male and female betta or fighting fish should be together is when they breed. Otherwise it's better to separate them before one or the other dies.
No, Because swordtail's need to have twice as many females as males. rule is 1 male to 2 female. if you put 1 male with 1 female, the male will harass her and stress will definitely kill her. you setup doesnt look good. you have 3 males to 2 females. you need to buy 4 more females. 3M to 6F ratio, then they will be happy. - mamumami It is true the ratio of swordtails should be 2 females or more to 1 male. From breeding swordtails for over 25 years I can definitely say it is possible to breed a male and female swordtail no matter how many of either sex is in the tank. Going with the recommended ratio of males to females will greatly increase your chance of breading swordtails. TMOCM
